Fearless

I offten get stuck on quotes and or bible verses that I try and live a little more like, for a while now I have been stuck on a quote by Taylor swift about being Fearless.
To me fearless is not the absence of fear, it’s not being completely afraid. To me fearless is having fears. Fearless is having doubts, lots of them. To me fearless is living in spite of those things that scare you to death. Fearless is falling madly in love again even though you’ve been hurt before. Fearless is getting back up and fighting for what you want, over and over again, even though every time you’ve tried before, you’ve lost. It’s fearless to have faith that someday things will change. Fearless is having the courage to say goodbye to someone who only hurts you, even if you can’t breathe without them. I think fearless is to fall for your best friend even though he’s in love with someone else and when someone apologizes to you enough times for things they’ll never stop doing I think it’s fearless to stop believing them. It’s fearless to say you’re not sorry and walk away. I think loving someone despite what people think is fearless. I think allowing yourself to cry on the bathroom floor is fearless. Letting go is fearless. Them moving on and being alright that’s fearless too. But not matter what love throws at you, you have to believe in it. It’s fearless to believe in love stories, prince charming’s and happily ever afters.”
This is pretty self explanitory and I think just about anyone can relate to it. Maybe you have not been through exactly what she has or what she is explaining but in everyones life there is SOMETHING they want to be fearless about, there is something they wish they didn't fear. I think she says it so well in this quote.

Trip to Vegas

This Aug. Me and 3 of my other friends are making a trip to Las Vegas because we'll all be twenty one. I, unfortunately got chosen to be the "coordinator" so I've been trying to utilize my resources in finding the cheapest/best ways to go about things!
First CHEAP TICKETS.COM I found us all tickets out of SOUTHWEST for just over $200 dollars... not bad :)
NEXT the Hotel... I'm trying to decided between a couple hotels.. Treasure Island, Ceasers Island and the Bellagio. We can't all decide on one and they all range about the same price!
We are also deciding what show to see while we are there. I have been there 3 times before so I've done a lot of site seeing but I've never been to any shows the ones we are deciding between are.... The Blue Man group, chippendales or cirque du soleil!
So many options and so much more planning to do. If you have an opinion that can help me to make a decision let me know :)

Post Christian America?

Not even close. I read an article in the USA Today that was published Monday April 17Th 2009 about the "post christian America" Throughout the article they explore different aspects of Christianity through polls and raw information. The conclusion at the end of the article says that the post christian world is no where near its the questions that are being asked when taking polls on "what religion people are."
It is said that instead of asking people what religion people are we need to start asking people if they are simply a believer in God, or if they are Christian. Just people you don't belong to a denomination doesn't mean your not a christian. More and more people these days are remaining non denominational claiming they are just christian. So is this becoming a post christian America, Not even close.
I couldn't agree with this article more to be honest. I was bored and raised a Lutheran and although when I go home I still attend my Lutheran church I would consider myself more non denominational then anything. I believe religion is simply a segregation to Gods word and its not about the church I attend or the name I put on my Christianity its the relationship I have with God when no one is around that counts

Tough Love

On VH1 there is a reality show called "Tough Love" which in my opinion is one of the best reality shows out there. And I LOVE reality shows... AKA.. trash TV!!

The show is based on a group of women all with different problems when its comes to dating. Steve Ward, the host of the show, helps the women to over come whatever issue they are faced with whether that be a gold digger, judgemental, whatever it may be. Steve sets them up on numerous dates and gives them goals and things to work on during every date with intensions of helping them form a relationship with one of the men they are matched with.

I think this is a really cool show. Aside from the drama your going to get with every reality show its pretty educational along with entertaining.

Car Accident

We pulled up to the intersection at Lila and Harvell, my sister and I that is. I looked both ways at the leaving and oncoming traffic waiting for the perfect time to cut across.
As I looked to the right I noticed my sisters foot tapping on the floor of my truck and her arm gripped tightly on the “oh shit” handle that hangs above the door.
My focus was lost when I saw her in this silent state of panic. I was taken back, by guilt, to three years ago when this exact intersection would forever haunt me.

BEEP BEEP BEEP! The sound of my alarm clock woke me up at 7:15am only second before the sound of my shower running from my sister who had been in there for fifteen minutes prior to my alarm.
I rolled over hitting the top of my alarm clock in hopes that snoozing it would just turn it off for good, but seven minutes later I was rudely awakened, again.
Five days a week my sister Caitlin and I were comparable to programmed robots doing the same thing every morning before I drove her to school.
The day started with a shower, her first and then I. I would rush to get ready because I of course would rather sleep an extra thirty minutes then spend that time looking in the mirror.

Caitlin and I were three years apart but that never made a difference in our relationship she was highly mature for her age, and I sat at about normal on the maturity level so that made us just about the same. Although we weren’t the type that did everything together the things we did do together meant a lot to
us and we were always inseparable around the house.

Caitlin was always persistent on making sure we left the house in just enough time to get to school at 8:00am.
Driving to school was my favorite part of the day, aside from the fact that it was a three and a half minute drive.
First we would get into my 1994 blue Chevy truck, then we would both put on our seatbelts and if by chance I forgot Caitlin was quick to remind me, the last step of preparation before we took off was Caitlin would roll down the windows and turn on the song we listened to every morning, “If I had one wish” by Ray J. This was the song my sister and I used to loosen up our vocal cords before school; there was something about the music being up so loud where we could hardly hear our own voices that made us think we actually had voices that were worth being heard.
Bellevue East High School awaited me and Caitlin every day at 8:00am she was a freshman and I was a senior so seeing each other throughout the day rarely every happened.

February 13, 2006

This day was different. It all went wrong when I got up at 7:00 instead of 7:22, it was downhill from there not to mention I got dressed up on this particular day. I had just gotten a new outfit, jeans and polo with some jewelry to match and if you knew me in high school this was abnormal in itself.
As my sister and I made our way down to my 1994 blue Chevy we hopped in and that was it, the routine was totally and completely thrown off.
We didn’t buckle up
We didn’t turn on our song
We didn’t roll down the windows to let everyone know we had voices worth hearing
Nothing
There was no explaining why this day was different. Everything from the first things we did to the last, it was different.

I came to the intersection that was nothing more than routine by this point but again, today was different. There was traffic like I had never seen before.
As my sister and I sat in silence we both looked back and forth at the standing traffic that was going east and the “standing/non-existent” traffic going west. In the mean time I was trying to shoot across both lanes of traffic to make it to the other side.
I squinted through the remaining frost that was on my windshield and my windshield wipers that were helping me see. It was my time; my time to make my way across the intersection.
The second my foot hit that gas pedal I knew that as much as I thought it was my time, it wasn’t.

“JACKI!!!!” Caitlin screamed only seconds before the loudest most terrifying sound crept into my truck.

I had no response. I knew what was happening, I could see out of my peripheral vision that there was a car coming our way at approximately thirty-five miles an hour with no intention of slowing down.
Because the traffic going west (closest to me) was stopped because of a red light I assumed the traffic going east was stopped too. It wasn’t.

One thought ran through my head.

How can I get my truck across the intersection without the oncoming car hitting my sister’s door which in any case would kill her.
In the split second I had to think up a game plan, I had it! I was going to swerve out and around the oncoming car leaving not a scratch on my truck, just a couple “PHEW’S” from everyone who saw this near accident.

Well, my plan was half way successful. Only there ended up being a BIG scratch on my truck and my opponent’s car, well; it was practically non-existent after I was done with it. My opponent smashed into the bed of my truck which sent my truck sailing into a pole where my truck came to a halting stop along with my head which hit my window.
I noticed that Caitlin was no longer on her side of the truck anymore, she was sitting right next to me, practically on my lap.
“Are you okay?” I asked Caitlin as I checked her body to make sure she was still intact.

As I was comforting my sister my opponent was outside my passenger seat window furious. As she approached my passenger seat window her face got tighter and her teeth clenched as she demanded I get out of the car.

It was then my adrenaline started pumping and I felt the need to tell this lady just what I thought about her accusation of me doing cookies in the middle of the road only to total her car.
Just as I was ready to jump out of my truck to defend myself my concussion had different plans for me.
“JACKI”!
I turned around with tears in my eyes and vomit half way out of my mouth to see my uncle Toad (I have never known his real name, everyone calls him Toad) to the rescue.
“Its okay, it’s okay. I’ll call your Mom,” he said.

The only thing I could have asked for at a time like this was to see a familiar face. After all I had nearly killed both me and my sister, my truck was about dead, I had a lady accusing me of doing this on purpose and I was crying and throwing up uncontrollably.

My sister and I held each other until my mom got to the scene. The guilt I felt for putting my sister though all of this started to sink in.
Will she ever be the same?
Will she be ok?
Will she be ok to drive when she gets her license?

My mother, the cops and the ambulance all showed up at once. At this point I was scared to get in trouble. What was my mom going to say about the truck I wrecked that had gotten passed down to me by my father? Was I going to get a ticket?

Things started to smooth out after we got the story out in the open for those who didn’t see it. My opponent started to calm down and my parents were just happy to see my sister and me alive. As for the cops they weren’t impressed and I walked away with a wreck less driving ticket.

But that all took a back seat to the guilt that was haunting me for putting my sister through all this. The one thing my sister and I had stronger than most people I know is trust. We trusted each other with everything; we leaned on that to hold our relationship up.

“Relax” I said to Caitlin
I could see her grip loosen from the “oh shit” handle, her hand fell into her lap and her foot slowly came to a stop.
I am the product of my sister not trusting my judgment but for that matter, anyone’s.
I am the reason my sister had nearly a hard attack every time we came to the intersection at Lila and Havell.
I cause her to get tense any time someone stops a little too fast for her liking or tries to make it through a yellow light.

Should I feel guilty three years later because of a few scars and a cramped neck that she gets every now and then? Should my mind jump to February 13th 2006 every time I see her hand slowly meet the handle above her?

Like all scars once they happen they are there to stay. More often than not you forget about the scares that have physically and mentally impacted you. They tend to fade away but sooner or later they will be noticeable.

shamWOW

"MARCH 30--In last month's violent confrontation between the ShamWow Guy and a South Beach prostitute, there is no doubt which combatant took the worst of the battle. As seen in the mug shot, Sasha Harris, 26, was left with a pair of black eyes and other injuries after tangling with Vince Shlomi, 44, in a room at the swanky Setai hotel. As TSG previously reported, Shlomi told cops that he met Harris in a Miami Beach nightclub and later paid her about $1000 for "straight sex." But when the TV pitchman tried to kiss Harris, she allegedly bit his tongue and would not let go. Shlomi told cops that he punched Harris several times until she released his bleeding tongue. Shlomi and Harris were both treated at the Mount Sinai Medical Center before being booked for felony aggravated battery (hence the matching hospital smocks). Prosecutors this month declined to pursue formal charges against either brawler."

column

Would it be unfair to say that most people relate emotions to something physical? Let me explain. For example, the pink ribbon symbolizes breast cancer awareness or the yellow live strong band symbolizes “live strong” from Lance Armstrong the bicyclist who battled cancer.
What is it about something we can hold, or look at, something the symbolizes something we stand for that makes it easier to overcome something over bearing in our lives?
Seven years ago my best friends Dad died of a heart attack with absolutely no warning. Jon and I had been friends for several years prior to this and were more or less working toward investing feelings into each other. I always used to wear a pink ribbon in my hair that Jon would flirtingly always pull out of my hair and try and keep. I, flirting back would always yank it out of his hands and tell him that when I didn’t want it anymore he could have it.
Death is by far one of the hardest things for people to deal with but coming from the outside looking in it’s so hard to come up with the words to comfort someone.
Let’s face it, you don’t just see people walking around yelling, “I support breast cancer awareness”, or “live strong” for Lance Armstrong. Those things are symbolized in their own little ways and as was the pink ribbon I cut in half for Jon and I to have.
It has been seven years since Jon’s Dad died and seven years since I cut the ribbon in hopes to give Jon something to hold onto when things got tough. Jon still carries the pink ribbon in his pocket every day and my end of the ribbon is still in my wallet.
Something so simple to someone from the outside looking in, but something so meaning full to the two of us. But what makes the fact of having something physical to hang on to so enduring to those going through something life changing?
Jon, a couple years later told me that it was so comforting when he reached into his pocket and felt the ribbon there. The ribbon was something that would never leave him, unless he chose to of course. Jon explained that he was reminded every time he felt the ribbon that I was there for him and I would never leave his side.
The fact of the matter is that sometimes you don’t always have to have the right words to say, sometimes you just need to give someone something to hold onto, something physical so they can be reminded day in and day out that there is something to live for, stand for, or believe in.
Although me and Jon’s friendship is far from how it used to be, every time I reach into my wallet I’m reminded of a friend that will never leave my side, I’m reminded that there was once a time in Jon’s life when that ribbon was what helped him get up in the morning and what helped him fall asleep at night. Jon will always have a place in my heart just as the ribbon will always have a place in my wallet.

Weakly Ranting

Okay, I have worked many jobs, everything from fast food to working at StratCom at Offut Air Force Base in Bellevue.
When you get hired at a job there is usually a packet full of training which entails everything you are supposed to do at your job. It is possible that especially at fast food restaurants management doesn't stress how important it is to have a positive attitude to the customers. I work in the food industry now (applebees) and granted it is a sit down restaurant that pays a little closer attention to how we treat out guest but talking to someone through speaker in a drive through doesn't mean you can act like your world is falling in.
Usually, not matter where I go if someone is acting pissy or just stand off-ish I say something like "bad day?" "you love your job don't cha" and a lot of the people are so caught of guard that I could actually tell they looked like they wanted to kill themselves... hypothetically of course.
Anyhow I irritates me to no end when people can't put their drama behind them (given the circumstance) and do their job correctly!

column idea...

I'm not sure if this really even counts as a column so help me out.
Anyhow, years and years ago I had a guy friend who lost his Dad to a heartattack. Aside from that I used to always wear this pink ribbon in my hair and he used to always steel it from me so when his Dad died I cut it in half and he carried his half around with him everywhere and as did I. He later told me that everytime he saw the ribbon or felt it in his pocket he knew that I was there for him and it helped him get through the pain.
NOW, for my column I was thinking of brining up the argument of why people make meaning and feeling and object. For example: the pink ribbon which symbolizes breast cancer awareness. What is it in an object that gives people comfort.
I don't know how well this would work for a column soooooo help me!

Concert Review

Emphatic, Papa Roach, Avenged Sevenfold & Buck Cherry all performed at the Heartland Event Center In Grand Island on April 3rd.
Emphatic, a band from Omaha opened up the show with none-the-less than a BANG. When a band on the rise like Emphatic is opening for bands such as Papa Roach who this year have been together for 10 years, its important they put their “A game on.” Emphatic did just that.
Following Emphatic was Papa Roach who as usual hypnotized the crowd with not only their songs but their crowd interaction. It is very obvious when a band is comfortable with the Crowd and Cody Dick, the lead singer makes it very apparent in every concert the connection he wants to make with the fans of Papa Roach.
Avenged Sevenfold followed Papa Roach with what I would call a “looksie” performance. As far as stage presence Avenged Sevenfold takes first pace but when it comes to performance they take the back seat. The stage presence during Avenged Sevenfold was absolutely amazing but I for one don’t go to a concert to look at bright lights and drop down, flat screen TV’s. The sound during their portion of concert was terrible and being the darker, screaming band they are with bad sound it made it even harder to understand.
Last and defiantly least the headliner for the entire show was Buck Cherry. There is a fine line between putting on a show and performing and Buck Cherry lacks performance. People go to concerts because A. they like the music and B. they like to feel and interact with singers and band members. Buck Cherry lacks the ability to connect with the audience.
If I wanted to listen to merely just music I would turn on my iPod and listen. When I go to a concert I want to feel so hypnotized into what the artist is singing and the conversation they are having with “me.” Now don’t get me wrong, moshing, crowd surfing, and jumping up and down without a care in the world doesn’t feel better then when you’re at a concert but that doesn’t take away from the fact that a concert is something we attend to feel something different than just a sound out of a speaker.
Overall I would give this concert a solid C. If I had it my way I would have taken the first two bands, Emphatic and Papa Roach and put them last so there would have been a good lasting impression. There is nothing worse than walking out of a concert you have been looking forward to and being somewhat disappointed. Lesson Learned.

"In the small Northern California town of Vacaville, four high school friends, Jacoby Shaddix, Jerry Horton, Dave Buckner, and Will James, decided to start a band. In 1993, they became Papa Roach, a band whose influences included prominent Bay Area acts such as Faith No More and Primus. Papa Roach quickly rose to the top of the Vacaville music scene with their blending of hip-hop, groove-funk, and hardcore. After a couple of years of playing coffeehouses, pizza joints, and keg-parties, they were headlining such places as the Cactus Club in San Jose, the Cattle Club in Sacramento, and the Berkeley Square in Berkeley"http://www.sing365.com/music/lyric.nsf/Papa-Roach-Biography/F49200557167D3D248256915001FED85
Avenged Sevenfold-The members of metalcore outfit Avenged Sevenfold (or A7X) were still attending high school in Huntington Beach, CA, when they formed their band in 1999. Nevertheless, it didn't take long for M. Shadows (vocals), Zacky Vengeance (guitar), Synyster Gates (guitar), the Reverend (drums), and Johnny Christ (bass) to make an impression with their aggressive hybrid of metal and punk-pop. The band made its official debut in July 2001, releasing Sounding the Seventh Trumpet on the Good Life label before moving to the Hopeless roster for 2003's Waking the Fallen. Warner Bros. took interest in the band's aggressive sound and issued its breakthrough release, City of Evil, in June 2005. The album reached number 30 on Billboard's Top 200, propelled in part by the Top Ten success of the single "Bat Country." The accompany music video was heavily rotated on MTV and Fuse, where live appearances also helped boost Avenged's growing profile, and the band ultimately won the Best New Artist Award (though they were hardly newcomers) at the 2006 MTV Video Music Awards. http://www.starpulse.com/Music/Avenged_Sevenfold/Biography/
BuckCherry- Josh Todd - Vocals Xavier Muriel - Drums Jimmy Ashhurst - Bass Keith Nelson - Guitar Stevie D. - Guitar Los Angeles hard rockers Buckcherry formed in mid-1995 after singer Joshua Todd and guitarist Keith Nelson were introduced through their tattoo artist; after cutting their earliest demos, the duo recruited bassist Jonathan "J.B." Following the subsequent addition of second guitarist Yogi, Buckcherry signed to DreamWorks Records, issuing their self-titled debut LP in 1999. Singles such as "Check Your Head" and "For the Movies" were modern rock hits for Buckcherry, allowing them to raise their profile by summer 2000. http://www.starpulse.com/Music/Buckcherry/Biography/

Although all this isn't going to go into my review I believe its good to have knowlege of the bands your talking about so I did some research to find out more info on the bands to help me get started.

A review of a review

Alrighty, I decided to do a review over a review on the movie "The Last House on the Left" that just recently came out. I got my review from the web site Rottentomatos.com.
First and foremost I will let you know BRIEFLY what I thought about the film, then I will highlight some of the things movie critic, Eric D. Snider said and then I will give you my opinion based on the two!
I thought the film was pretty good. I didn't care for the very beginning because I thought it gave a lot away but aside from that there were no major parts that I didn't care for. I think the reason why I liked the film as much as I did is because although there were predictable parts it wasn't your average, blond girl, half naked, broken leg, killer walks and always beats you there kind of movie. This movie, for the most part, was realistic and pushed the envelope in many scenes. I thought this movie did a good job of making people feel uncomfortable, like scary or thrill movies should do. Overall I would probably rate this movie about a B+
Now, Eric D. Snider, I believe, had somewhat of the same opinion. Snider says, " 'The Last House on the Left" is well made for its genre, and certainly better than the toothless thrillers and soulless torture flicks that have been the norm lately. Maybe it's as good as it could be, given its inherent nastiness and structural simplicity. All I know is, for a doctor, Mari's dad sure doesn't adhere to that 'first, do no harm' rule."
Snider also goes on to explain that although there was some predictability there is something comforting for viewers to know how things are going to wind up at the end yet we still want surprises every now and then. Snider goes on to raise the question that is it reasonable to want both? To want familiarity and originality?
Overall Snider rated this movie a B-
I felt like after reading his review he rated the film kind of low but I'm not film critic therefore I don't know the consistency or the level at which they rate films.
I thought snider did a good job of giving good back round information about the actors and actresses and then a brief summary about the film, not giving away to much detail. I would have liked to see more of his opinion though. 3/4 of the entire review is telling us about the film and then only a short paragraph telling us what he thought. Although his thoughts were legitimate it would have been nice to know more.

What does Lingerie and Lincolns city council have in common?

As we all know, or I thought we all knew, "Dr. Johns" is a novelty store for lingerie and sex toys. Now "Dr. John" says he is running for Lincolns city council. Not that I have anything against this but I just think it is really funny.
I found an article on WOWT.com that says...
The "Dr. John" of the Doctor John's sex shops says he's running for Lincoln city council.
John Haltom owns seven "lingerie novelty boutiques" in several states, including Nebraska. Two of the stores are in Lincoln.
The 41-year-old says he's been a civic activist since his twenties, fighting for people's gun rights and against censorship.
Haltom's been convicted in other cities, including Omaha, of selling sexually explicit videos. However, he says his political run is no publicity stunt.
The Republican is one of six candidates for the three council seats at stake in the April 7 primary.
I believe it is going to be hard for people to take Dr. John seriously. After all he does own a lingerie store and he has been in a lot of trouble with the law.
Since then I have found out they have turned down Dr. John to be on the City Council but I can't find anything that shows it. The website I thought would have an article on it, took it off

Master Cleanse

For the past five day I have been taking part in what is called a "master cleanse" http://therawfoodsite.com/mastercleanse.htm
http://calorielab.com/news/2008/07/17/master-cleanse-in-detail/ < this one is better! :)

The cleanse is a 10 day detoxification process in which you don't eat for 10 days and you drink a water mixture including freshly squeezed lemon juice, pure maple syrup and Cayenne pepper. I also drink an herbal tea laxative at night and sea salt water in the morning

I did a lot of research upon doing this because obviously eating for ten days doesn't seem healthy let alone appealing.

Anyhow, at the end of the day today I will have completed day 5! This has probably been one of the hardest things I have ever done but has shown me how strong of a person I am. It hasn't been easy and I doubt the next 5 days are going to get any easier but so far it has been worth it.
I challenge you to check it out yourself. The website I gave above gives some pretty good info on it and if you are really interested you can buy the book, like I did!!

Smile - rough draft column

let me know what you think so I can get this turned in :)

In 1999 an artist known as Vitamin C came out with a song entitled “Smile.” The song “smile” talks about exactly that, smiling, when things get tough. Vitamin C couldn’t have said it better than me in the Corus where she repeatedly says “put a smile on your face, and make the world a better place.”
Is it possible that a smile is contagious? According to Dictionary.com smiling is defined a facial expression indicating pleasure, favor, or amusement, but sometimes derision or scorn, characterized by an upturning of the corners of the mouth. I believe a smile is one of the easiest life changing gestures you could ever give someone. More times than not people think that they have to donate a certain amount of money, or go to a different country to make a difference. But whatever happened to the simple gesture of a smile. Even when you don’t feel like smiling Vitamin C reminds us
When thing's isn't right, there's not need to fightand everything nice Please be polite even when you're hurting Don't forget to smile Give love to our nation, big or small When you do good, you'll get your reward United with undivided we fall Put a smile on your face and greet one and all
My spring break of 09’ did not consist of laying on the beach in Panama City Florida nor did it consist of clubbing in South Padre. My spring break consisted of family time in Bellevue Nebraska and developing my own idea of a way to influence someone’s life.
My cousin Stephanie and I are partners in crime when it comes to doing random acts of kindness but for this particular spring break we decided we were going to make a gigantic sign and hold it on a bridge on Dodge Street, a main street, in Omaha.
Deciding what to put on the sign was one of the more difficult things for us. We had to come up with something, short, inspiring in some way, not offensive, and something with an immediate response so we could tell if we were successful in perhaps making someone’s day go from bad to good.
“Have a good day” was far too bland and “Pray, he listens” could have gotten us into some trouble seeing as though we were in the heart of Omaha.
After a couple days of thought, we came up with “Honk if you are smiling.”
Now this may seem kind of bland as well, but we picked this one for a number of reasons. First of all we decided to put honk because we wanted to have an immediate response. If we wouldn’t have put honk we would have never of known if people even noticed us let alone read what we wrote.
We decided to use the word smile because we both feel like the power of the smile is contagious. Driving is one of the single most relaxing things to do, in my opinion. It gives you time to think and sort things out but more times than not your probably not going to be smiling in your car.
Did it ever occur to us that maybe, just maybe someone driving beside you was having a worse day than you were and just the small gesture of a smile could have totally turned that day around.
Stephanie and I stood on the doge street bridge for about an hour during rush hour and counted how many honks we got. Not knowing how this was going to turn out I was pleasantly surprised at the response we got.
We received 97 honks! Now whether or not this person was simply driving down the road smiling because they heard something funny on the radio, was involved in a funny phone conversation or maybe just saw our sign and decided to smile I believe Stephanie and I helped make Dodge street a happier place.

Goal: Karoke (CHECK)

My cousin and I decided to do karoke on St. Patty's day at a bar called The Korner... We had an amazing time and did a good job entertaining. (we are going back friday)

I think the reason why doing Karoke was one of our goals is because both me and my cousin have a passion for music/singing but we both suck at it major!! The only place its really ever acceptable for us to sing is in the shower and in the car where NO ONE can hear us!!

Goal: skateland (CHECK)

Some of you may wonder why skateland was one of our goals. Not only was skateland the "cool" thing to do while growing up but my cousin and I used to go EVERY Friday and Saturday and even sometimes during the week. When we became "too cool" for skateland we stopped going. (ps. its now called skate city) We always talk about going back but never get around to it. Well we did......

A piece in progress

So when I was a senior in high school my little sister Caitlin had one of her best friends commit suicide. This was hard for her, as it would be for just about anyone.
Anyhow, 4 years later I still see struggle in her eyes because of some events that led up to his suicide. My sister means more to me than anything in the world and to see her hurt and still have a heavy heart makes me hurt.
I felt as though she had never really fully recovered from this incident and I wanted to help.
SO, what I decided to do was interview her about everything from how they met to how she still feels about him committing suicide, try and make it a prevention and a "lesson learned" kind of story and then send it to Seventeen Magazine and see if they wouldn't publish it to help other kids who deal with this kind of stuff.
I decided to write it in such a way that it was in first person, though her eyes, but I wrote it.
Needless to say I sent my cover letter in (which is a paper that tries to "sell" your piece and the things I wanted attach with my piece such as the 5 stages to grieving) and they sent me a letter back saying they are interested but they don't have a spot for it now but they would keep it on file. Perhaps it was an easy way to let me down but even so I still work on the piece every now and then JUST IN CASE and I still find things I am uneasy about in the piece but I would like an outsiders opinion. SO... here ya go!

Spring break Goals

Okay, every time I come home for a holiday or summer my cousin (aka best friend) and I make a list of things we want to "accomplish" or just simply do while I'm home. These are usually things that you wouldn't just do every day. Typically when we do these things, big or not we try and see how much we can get out of it. My cousin and I are the type of people that can make just about any situation interesting.
We came up with five things and out of these five things I'm going to try and pick on that is the most successful and write my column over it.
1. Sing karaoke
2. Hold an inspirational sign over the dodge street bridge in Omaha
3. Go into an "all lights" store that we always pass but never go into
4. Work out everyday
5. Go to skateland (a skating rink that used to be the "cool" thing back in the day)
Although these might seem like weird things to you, you have to understand Stephanie and I. We ARE weird.
I'm guessing the one I will write my column on is number 2 because this is something we have always wanted to do by seeing other people do it, but we never get around to do it.
I'm going to try and keep you guys posted through blogs and pictures on how these work out for us!
Talk to you soon!

Trayless Tuesdays

With an average of 70 gallons of water being saved and food waste reduced by 50% universities all over the Country are taking part in what they like to call “Trayless Tuesday’s.”
Trayless Tuesday’s was a program designed to eliminate the amount of water used to wash the trays in a cafeteria and to help reduce the amount of wasted food by taking away trays, leaving students with only plates to fill.
Although students from all over including University of Minnesota, New York University, Concordia University, and even right here on UNK’s campus express the inconvenience of the Trayless Tuesday’s, statistics show that it is a very effective program.
The cafeteria right here on UNK’s campus did a trial run on Trayless Tuesday’s during the months of November and December hoping to receive positive feedback from not only the students at UNK but the food budget. Chartwells, the dining company at UNK has decided to make Trayless Tuesday’s part of daily dining starting in January 2009.
But the real debate here doesn’t lie in whether or not it is convenient or inconvenient for the students. The real debate is being educating the students on how much water it takes to wash all the trays in one particular day. This also leads us to take into account how much food is being wasted due to the convenience of the trays.
According to Dineoncampus.com a study showed that if there were approximately 600 students in a cafeteria in one day, it takes approximately 100 minutes to wash all the trays adding up to 70 gallons of water going to waste. Schools that go trayless one day per week reduce waste by an average of 1/3 on those days some reporting as much as a 50% reduction in waste, in turn reducing food cost by 4.9%.
It is obvious that Trayless Tuesday’s is effective but convenience is still overpowering the minds of students, every Tuesday.
Although Trayless Tuesday’s has a catching ring to it, why Tuesdays? Would it be just as effective if students were forced to forgo trays on both Saturday and Sunday’s when typically, the cafeteria isn’t as busy?
Perhaps educating students on the reason this is being done and showing students visually and statistically the effects what one day without trays can do, they will support Trayless Tuesday’s
Kelly McPherson from ABC news did an interview with a student at Morrisville State, he explains if he tray he probably would have ended up wasting half of what he picked up and by only having a plate he will more than likely eat everything on it.
Students see both the pros and cons but in order to get support there needs to be more time spent on educating students on the reasons why the action is being taken rather than enforcing the action. With that being said there needs to be more than just a random sign placed randomly in the middle of the cafeteria saying “save water, go trayless.” Although students are not going to spend twenty minutes reading an article while listening to their stomachs growl, statistics placed around the cafeteria along with pictures will better set the stage for the change.
Trayless Tuesday’s is a great way to make a change, but we need to get everyone to believe it, let’s educate those around us all while eating trayless.

  • I'm still working on making each point I have run together
  • making my claims a bit stronger
  • and a catching ending that have 'TAV'

Any suggestions?!?

The Cab

The Cab is one of my all time favorite bands. But more importantly accidently ran across a blog that one of the group members (Alexander Michael - better known as Alex) has. The blog is him just being him, sharing fun facts, meanings behind lyrics, pictures, updates, just about anything. I thought it was very interesting to see how he designed his blog and how open about his feelings he was on it.

cooooool blog

I felt like this blog was interesting because I like when I can relate to people. I feel like girl who wrote this was brutally honest about her feelings and it made it easy for me to relate with her. as I've said before I'm really into music because I can relate to it, being able to relate to situations makes it easy for me to follow and be interested.

leggit argument?!

Back when I used to be in high school I was a HUGE slacker but somehow always managed to pull it out at last minute. I always remember my mom saying, "once you get to college your professors aren't going to care if you pass or fail." I remember so vividly thinking, then why the hell are they teaching if they don't care?!
I am finding more and more every day that she is right. I understand that professors have a purpose, go to class, share their knowledge, give assignments, grade them, and be done! But sometimes I feel like when I'm in a class the professor just ASSUMES I'm supposed to know what they are taking about. So, say I am supposed to understand, and I don't, for whatever reason. YOUR THE TEACHER, so teach me what I don't know, or don't understand, don't make me feel like a complete idiot.
Prior to coming to UNK I went to Concordia University in Seward Nebraska, a small school and a small town. I was in the journalism department where there was literally only 2 or 3 professors that taught EVERY class. I had decided maybe a month before going into college that journalism and broadcasting is what I wanted to purse, so everything was very new to me and needless to say I was treated like I was incompetent. I might not be the fastest learner ever but I try damn hard. SO I transferred because I hated it there. Come to find out maybe it was just me wanting someone to babysit me and tell me "ITS OKAY JACKI TRY BETTER NEXT TIME."
But to wrap things up, what are these professors doing teaching if they don't give a shit to help me learn. I understand I'm 20 years old and my days of hand holding are over but your educating ME for THE future, the future of millions so for gods sake help me get there so I can make a difference.
THANK YOU FOR LISTENING/READING!

Local Issues

How big of an issue is drugs on the UNK campus. Clearly its enough for UNK to be taking into consideration testing hair for drug use.
The stance I take on this issue is that it is irrelevant and un needed. It is expensive and can give false answers and an inaccurate time line.
http://www.craigmedical.com/Hair_Drug_Test.htm

Lowering the Drinking age in kearney? Aside from the fact that I'm unaware that you can do that by city I don't believe it would solve as many problems as you think it would. Although there are pros and cons to changing the drinking age as a whole I guess you'll never know unless you try.

Tray-less Tuesdays - My stand on this issue is a positive one, I believe this helps to save water, food and in a long shot could help against obesity. Not only do people need to be educated on what tray-less Tuesdays is but WHY we need to save water and HOW it will benefit us and the world.

Tray-less Tuesday During November and December, Chartwells will have trial period of “Tray-less Tuesday." "Tray-less" a movement to help decrease food waste, water waste, and the chemical footprint in dining halls. It has been so successful that some schools have gone completely tray-less. Please provide feedback. If feedback is positive, Chartwells will integrate “Tray-less Tuesday" into daily dining beginning January 2009. medical center editorial

rough draft ISH

Coincidence or medical negligence? On Feb 2, three residents from the Beatrice State Developmental Center all died within three weeks of each other, each patient seeking medical assistance on the same floor of the Developmental Center.
It seems clear to most that this is more than just a coincidence especially when according to the Kearney Hub, Nebraska’s chief medical officer ordered all “medically fragile” resident to be moved from the facility. This voices nothing more than worry that perhaps the weaker of the patients at the medical facility would not be able to survive in the week conditions they were providing.
The initial issue is obviously the unfortunate deaths of the three individuals but now we are forced to look at the bigger picture. Why did this happen in the first place and why did it take loosing certification and $29 million in federal funding to finally get some improvement in the conditions of the medical facility? This leads us to wonder one thing and one thing only, would there be any change had the loss not been so great?
There are certain things that can be dealt with at a much more relaxed level when not being tended to properly, such as building codes, restaurant regulation and so on. But when a medical facility is putting the lives of patients at risk, this cannot and should not be over looked. When we get to a point where not even the lives of human beings are being tended to properly one must wonder, what is next?
Although the case of this particular medical center has made an impact on not only the people effected directly but the people around them as well, it forces us to look and be more aware of the trust we put into the people taking care of us.
There should be some sort of urgency coming from not only the staff at the medical facility but Nebraska Officials.
Priority needs to be rearranged at the Beatrice State Developmental Center and it needs to start with the staff and leadership and it needs to be followed up by Nebraska Officials. Last but not least it’s important that we be more aware of cases like this that have been over looked in the past and pay more attention to cases like this that are happening right now, elsewhere. Being more aware is half the battle, taking a stand and making a difference is the other half.

editoral trouble

Due to missing class I'm unaware how I should write this editorial exactly.
I think I'm going to write about the Kearney "bridge" if you will. Although I don't know what the city has planned for it as a very rough draft I'm going to talk about what its uses are and what I think it should be turned into!

Regional issues

I think an issue is pending in Kearney is how to Make good use of the "Great Platte River Archway." With little to no research on the topic yet, I don't think the Archway is paying for itself. Meaning it is not as popular as they thought it was going to be.
- How can the city of Kearney make it more appealing
-How could the city of Kearney renovate it to bring in more people
- Should Kearney just dispose of the Archway?

I think crime rate would be interesting to look at from the past couple years or even crime rate from when school is in session to when school is out of session
-does it increase or decrease
- when/what months is crime the highest
- what crime
http://safety.fizber.com/nebraska/kearney/

Something that is always talked about when UNK is brought up is if it really is the party school it has been known to be. Another interesting topic could be if it is a party school and maybe get some statistics on how many MIPS and DUI are given out a year.

Motivation..

By this time of the year many things are playing into the fact that I have ABSOLUTELY NO motivation to do anything except, well, sleep! It's late in the year, school seems to be dragging out, the weather is still kind of crappy and for Gods sake I'm run down.
I wouldn't call myself an A+ student by any means, I never have been, but that doesn't take away from the fact that I could be if I really wanted to. But I don't. Hell I don't even care to be a 'B' student. Why? You tell me.
My motivation dwindles more and more every day and I don't know how to make it stop. I have tried to do things to spice up my school life like buy new pencils, notebooks and folders (that's always fun) IT DIDN'T WORK, I tried getting up and eating and working out in the morning, that just made me more tired.
Could it be physiological? Well I went to the Dr. and he said he doesn't think I'm depressed at all it is just simply a lack of motivation.
Last but not least I asked my mom and of course she says "Jacki, graduating on time should be enough motivation."....thanks for nothing, MOM!
-SO HERE IS MY GAME PLAN-
And this blog is going to help me keep track and help me to be held accountable to a healthier more motivated life style.
- Every day regardless of when I have class I will be up at 9:00 eating breakfast
- I will not nap during the day (that has become a habit for me) therefore helping me to go to sleep earlier and sleep better at night
- I will go to sleep every night by 11:30, well be in bed.
- No more fast food, or eating at work.
- No more drinking soda
- Last but not least I want to work on self motivating myself, being more positive from the second I wake up until the second I go to sleep, finding positive reasons to wake up, go to class and work!

Tyra Banks

The other day I was watching The Tyra Banks show, which by the way is one of my favorite shows to watch. Anyhow the topic was "divorce parties." The show kicked off with four women that had recently been divorced for a number of reasons.
The women went on to explain why they were divorced and they got to "get rid of" something that reminded them of the marriage in a creative way ex: wedding dress, ring, marriage licence and so on.
Further more the women explained how they have struggled since the divorce and how they have not been able to bounce back from what happened.
Tyra and her producers did things for the women that fit their struggles ex: gave them money, make overs, counseling and so on.
Concluding the show they had an "expert" talk about things you needed for a divorce party ex: a cake, drink of choice and so on.
NOW, your probably wondering what my point is and I'm not really sure myself, why? Because although I'm sure getting a divorce is a very low and depressing point in ones life I can't imagine a party and destroying things from the marriage are going to help you get past the past.
Not to mention to do you think all your friends get divorced at one time? No so how are you going to have a divorce party? Get on creigs list and invite newly divorced people over? I sure as hell wouldn't want to have a divorce party with a bunch of happily married women who don't understand.
On a second note I thought it was very stereotypical that there was ONLY women on the show, as if men didn't have feelings or struggle with divorce as well. I know The Tyra Banks show is solely based around women but don't you think the women who were on the show hurting from divorced would have liked to see that men DO HURT every once and a while too?
PHEW, okay my point throughout all this "ranting" if you will, is that although a "divorce party" could serve some purpose I don't think it was worthy of a 45 min. show.
If you would like to see more, feel free I put the link below :)

may seem pointless but hear me out..

If I could pick two of my favorite things in the world it would be music and water. Which brings me to my next point, I absolutely love music, everything about it, and every single kind! The inspiration for this blog comes from the song that I just recently downloaded called Thinking of You by katy Perry. Not just this song but lyrics in general speak so loud to me. For instance you could tell me something and it may go in one ear and out the other but put in lyric form and somehow I will find a way to relate and it will stick forever. My point here is about people who sing along to lyrics but have absolutely know idea what they are singing about. I'm not saying EVERY SINGLE PERSON needs to piece apart every word in a song BUT, I believe people could use music to express themselves as much as I do if they payed attention.

Can tanning be beneficial?

After reviewing the pros and cons of indoor and outdoor tanning, nearly 30 million Americans are turning to indoor tanning facilities to help maintain their tans in a controlled environment and minimize the risk of sunburn.

Tanning is a form of relaxation, but males and females tan for a number of reasons.

Most associate tanning with one to two things, skin cancer or great looks, but can one actually gain something from indoor tanning?

Tanning can be beneficial for a number of reasons.

According to tan advisor.com, sessions in a tanning bed are particularly helpful for individuals suffering from psoriasis, osteoporosis, seasonal depression, acne and many other things.

Whether tanning indoors, or by natural sunlight, tanning becomes unhealthy when the skin starts to burn.

According to an MSNBC study, indoor tanning was most popular in the Midwest, where sunny weather is limited

Kearney has at least 10 facilities that have tanning units

The debate isn’t about pros and cons. It is about being informed about what tanning can do for you, and how it could potentially benefit you.

change of heart

Due to a change of heart I decided to do my editorial on tanning - no no, it is not about how bad it is for you and how you should wear sunscreen at all times. It is about how tanning can patiently benefit you. I Have done some research to back up my views and opinion on this topic as well.
As of now I am just working on gathering my claims!

Wednesday, January 21, 2009

Alright, so I'm supposed to come up with a national or international issue to write an editorial on. I don't want to write about something I'm really educated about because I want to learn something, but I don't want to write about something I know nothing about so, some of the topics I've come up with are abortion, health care, or job cuts.
I'm leaning toward job cuts because right now a lot of people are are effected by it and there are a lot statistics on it.
Let me know your opinion

This is what I think

The article I choose to read was Stage Set for Stadium Prep Work. I found this article in the Omaha World Herald. The article is about preparing to tear up the Qwest Center parking lot in preparation to building the new stadium for the College World Series. Throughout the article it goes on to talk about how much money is being put into this project, how big it is going to be, contracts that were signed and most of all when they are going to start building.
I have lived in the Omaha area my entire life with that being said the College World Series is a very big event for not only people who live in the Omaha area but people from all over. I wouldn’t say I disagree with the move of the college world series especially because it’s not going very far from its birth spot it is just the fact that it is being moved that a lot of Omaha natives are uncomfortable with. I think it will be beneficial when it is complete, one might just wonder if there are better things the money could be going toward.

Hello World

Hello World! My Name is Jackelyn Chandler, but you can call me Jacki. I'm from Bellevue Nebraska and decided to start my college career off at Concordia University in Seward Nebraska. Concordia, or more or less Seward just wasn't the place for me which is why I'm now at UNK. I'm studying broadcasting in hopes to do either entertainment broadcasting or be a journalist for Seventeen Magazine. My dreams are high but I'm shooting for them.
I have never taped into the world of blogging but so far I like it a lot. I'm very open to new ideas and I love trying new things. I would describe myself as a very outgoing person that is easy to get along with, I hope. :)
Well, I don't want you to be too overwhelmed with information so .. until next time, remember : "There is nothing better then being yourself"
